Join artist and Illyria Pottery owner, Katie Coston, for a Raku workshop.
She has recently built a raku kiln, and is ready to share the experience of finishing pieces in this exciting process.
Raku workshops are offered in two parts:
- Book onto a wheel-throwing session of your choice where you’ll have the chance to create your own pieces of pottery. Please ensure your wheel class is at least two weeks before your Raku workshop to ensure we have time to dry and bisque fire your pottery. Want to fire pieces you've made elsewhere? See More details below.
- Book onto a Raku workshop of your choice for a chance to learn how to glaze and fire your creations in our new, outdoor kiln. (Up to three pieces to be fired in the Raku kiln. Any additional pieces to be fired in the electric kiln).
Each Raku workshop will begin with a demonstration of glazing and the chance to add colour to your bisque-fired pieces. Then the work will be taken outside to be glaze-fired in the dynamic and comparatively quick process known as Raku. Each piece is set inside the kiln and heated until glowing hot. Once the glaze is molten, the lid of the kiln is lifted off. Pieces will be taken from the heat, and placed into metal bins of combustible material. The pots are allowed to smoulder in the bins while the next pots are heated in the kiln. After approximately 30 minutes, the pieces in the bins will be removed and the dramatic and variegated colours intrinsic to this process are revealed!
Raku workshops consist of several “rounds” firings. Each session is capped at 6 attendees so that work created can be finished during your workshop and taken away with you. Each session begins with all steps being demonstrated for attendees. During subsequent “rounds” of firings, attendees are welcome to assist to the extent that they feel comfortable. There will be opportunities to leave and eat or get lunch while the kiln heats and cools between firings.
Want to fire pots you've already made? If you've produced bisque-fired, stoneware pieces elsewhere and would like raku fire them, then there's no need to join a wheel throwing course unless you'd like to. You can simply book the Raku Workshop. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org for a few more details.
Because these classes primarily occur outdoors, sessions may be cancelled due to inclement weather. If your session is cancelled, it will be rescheduled. If you’re unable to attend on the new date, your money will be refunded (or we may be able to fire your pieces for you for a lower fee).
