Illyria Pottery Apprenticeships

Job Description

Illyria Pottery, located in Jericho, Oxford, is the private studio and shop of studio potter and ceramicist, Katie Coston.

Illyria offers a paid apprenticeship to those keen to gain experience in art retail, to train in the operation of a working ceramic studio, and to learn from a professional potter. We’ve had an apprenticeship program since 2013 with many former apprentices going on to start their own pottery studios, work in galleries, and continue in other aesthetic endeavours.

Apprentices are offered work on a zero-hour contract basis at the current minimum wage (£7.83 per hour). Generally, the work will be available for each apprentice at one day (7 hours) per week. Work schedules will vary from month to month but will be confirmed during the last week of the month prior. Apprentices will be paid at the end of each calendar month.

In addition to hourly wages, apprentices are offered an exclusive benefit of “Masterclass” tuition. On Monday evenings from 5:45-9:00 the apprentices convene in the studio to explore the many facets of clay. Artist and owner, Katie Coston (B.A. Art Education, M.A. Three-Dimensional Studio Art), teaches wheel-throwing and handbuilding techniques (basic, intermediate, and advanced) and offers glazing instruction and advice on firing. This is a unique opportunity to have Katie’s guidance, as all other courses at Illyria are taught by a guest instructor. The cost of the studio rental is £220 per month. All materials, tuition, and kiln firings are included, and all pieces made are the property of the apprentices and will be theirs to keep. Apprentices book in and pay for the next month’s round at the end of each month. From the beginning of May apprentices will also receive two extra evenings of independent studio time per month at no additional cost.
